RI Forestry Support Program

Free workshops, planning support, and on-the-ground assistance for Rhode Island landowners.

PPLT is partnering with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management’s Forest Stewardship Program to help private landowners understand, plan for, and care for their woods.

RI Forestry Support Program

This program is funded to reach landowners who have historically had the least access to forestry assistance: Tribal members, people who have owned their land for fewer than ten years, veterans, landowners with limited income or resources, and landowners in lower-income communities. But all are welcome — participation is open to anyone who owns woods in Rhode Island, however large or small.

Free management plans and assistance

Pocasset Pokanoket Land Trust (PPLT) is partnering with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) to engage private forest land owners from historically underserved communities, with the goals of creating better outreach and resources, and giving PPLT and RIDEM better understanding of forested lands within Rhode Island, making forestry planning simpler for future state projects.

Assistance may include:

  • Thinning
  • Prescribed fire
  • Slash fences
  • Carbon markets
  • Management of invasives or pests

Why We’re Removing Invasive Plants

Invasive plants were brought here and escaped into Rhode Island’s woods, where once established they crowd out, choke, and replace the native shrubs and young trees that support our watersheds, wildlife and people. Bittersweet kills and pulls down mature trees; barberry creates thickets that shelter deer ticks in high abundance; a forest floor taken over by invasives can’t grow the next generation of native trees and shrubs.

Free Invasive Plant Species Removal Program

After attending workshops, RI landowners can qualify for a free site visit, an invasive plant treatment plan, and 100% cost-free removals. We can also help with forest management plans, biodiversity assessments, and land guidance —any private landowner may apply for support

To Enroll:

  • Attend a workshop: Free and open to anyone who owns land in RI. Get hands on training on how to spot invasive plants taking over our forests and how to remove them to create healthier woods. Attending both workshops qualifies you to get on the treatment list.
  • Register: Fill out the short form and pick a workshop. Not ready yet? You can just join the list for updates.
