Chief Sequan Pijaki
Chairman
Chief Sequan Pijaki (Chief George Spring Buffalo) is the Chairman of the Pocasset Wampanoag Tribe of the Pokanoket Nation and Founder of the Pocasset Pokanoket Land Trust. He is a direct descendant of Weetamoe, Massasoit, and Metacom (King Philip), who were the first Indigenous people to welcome the Pilgrims. His Pocasset tribe obtained the first deeded reservation in the country—Watuppa Reservation—and the Pocasset Tribe is the only non-federal tribe to have a land agreement with a major casino. Chief George is also a co-founder of the Indigenous People’s Network and the Chairman and Founder of the Affiliated Tribes of the New England Indians. He serves on the advisory boards for many social justice organizations, including the Providence Racial and Environmental Justice Committee and the Worcester Partnership for Racial and Ethnic Health Equity. In his “spare time” he enjoys practicing and teaching martial arts.
